Bonsai Search Adventure

This Saturday, August 14, 2021, Roland, more often known as Ro-Ro and I set out to find a post for our fast-growing Royal Poinciana tree. Below is a beautiful specimen of a full grown Royal Poinciana at Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach, Florida.

My little guy, however, is just a few months old.

The seeds were a birthday gift in a bonsai starter kit from Evizz Playz . Since this little tree is growing so fast, I wanted to find him a suitable Bonsai pot, but I didn't want to order something online. It seemed so impersonal, and the art of Bonsai seems genuine and intimate. Ordering off Amazon or Bonsai warehouse just seemed inappropriate.

It turns out, that just up the road in Palm City, Florida, there is a Bonsai garden and shop run by a retired gentlemen who focuses all his efforts on raising Bonsai trees and supplying practitioners. His passion shows in Dragon Tree Bonsai where there are plants that have been growing for more than 40 years.

The random Zebra Longwing butterflies, hopping rabbits, sprouting Milkweed in random places, left logs with thriving mushroom colonies and active insect hatches on the pond all lend to a peaceful quality where nature is rampant, and yet ultimately controlled in each individual tree.

If you are interested in the full morning's frivolity, be sure to check our our video above or directly on our You Tube Channel.

The advice of the gentleman at Dragon Bonsai, was to plant our Royal Poinciana in a shallow pot for another year and let it grow and strengthen before we put it in a ceramic pot, which is what we shall do. But, I couldn't go to a Bonsai garden such as this without picking up at least one tree - maybe two. We learned that any of the tropical varieties will do well here in South Florida, and they had a large selection of trees that had been potted this Spring. We ended up selecting a gorgeous Green Island Ficus and Lavender Star.

These two beauties are temporarily sitting in our burgeoning butterfly garden and I am told that they will be growing quickly and I will have to learn the art of pruning them very soon.

We had a lovely morning looking for these two and beginning to learn about the art of Bonsai. We will certainly have updates as our learning progresses.

Thanks for reading - or at least looking at the pictures.
